Who moved my food dish?

Moving a dog's food dish or bed are two cardinal sins in a dog's world.  Dog lovers know that dogs love their humans, food and routine (not necessarily in that order)!  Red's dish has been in the exact same spot for over five years.  I've seen the puzzled look, the scrunched up face and cocked ears when it's moved for cleaning.  Moving a dog's dish across the room is bad enough, but moving it across the country??  Oy.

Thankfully, in my eagerness to research housing choices in the L.A. area, I came across the dreaded BSL.  Breed Specific Laws are alive and well in L.A.  I thought with California being so progressive, this would have been a thing of the past.  Boy was I wrong!   I saw "pet friendly" and assumed all breeds were welcome with a security deposit and added rent per month for a pet.  I mean, who wouldn't want  a dog like Red on the premise?  He's quiet, (Red has barked a handful of times in the five years we've had him),  housebroken, relatively clean and sleeps all day.  What's the problem?  The problem isn't Red.  The problem is a stigma attached to all breeds on this list, and believe me when I say it's a lengthy list of breeds!  I am just thankful I found this out now instead of later down the road.

Our original plan was to rent an apartment in a cool location with a rooftop pool, barbecue and lounge areas, gym, all the modern conveniences and NO work for us.  Sounded great on paper....

I can't change City Hall, but I wanted to at least mention this BSL situation so others who are thinking of moving are aware.  There is a website www.mypitbullisfamily.org  that is designed to help those all over the country looking for housing with a blacklisted dog.  I did some research on this topic, but for us the better answer is to buy, not rent.  Okay, so Red looks a little menacing when running through the flower beds...😁

Buy in L.A.?  Are you crazy??  Maybe, but again from my research,  I am finding paying a mortgage is less expensive than renting a house.  And, we get the added benefits of home ownership.  Having a tax write-off is big, being able to decorate to our liking and not worrying about Red are huge pluses.  There are many L.A. suburbs that are still affordable, given the housing climate out there.  At least it isn't San Fransisco prices! 😎

Down the road I will talk about finding a home 3,000 miles away and all that will entail.  For now, the concentration is on getting our current home cleaned out and sold.  Focus will be on cleaning and purging and liberating ourselves from, well, stuff!

So, yes Red, your food dish will be moved.  We will find a new spot for your dish and you will again be content to know not much changes in your world!

  1. I'm so happy for you and Steve. You are brave souls!! We want to move South but find seperating from our kids and future grandkids to be very difficult. And keep researching BSL. Being a bully owner (we actually just lost ours), I know that the law sucks and also doesn't work. But it also applies to homes you purchase, not just rent. Loving the updates!!

    1. Cindy,
We don’t look at it like we are moving away from kids. Adult children can wind up anywhere due to school or jobs. They can live with us or have a great place to visit! It’s an adventure for all of us!
California has a law that prohibits singling out pitbulls as dangerous to own. Many SoCal people own pitbulls, but an apartment complex can use BSL in their contract.
