A little introduction goes a long way....
Let me start my very first blog with a brief hello. My name is Susan, I have a wonderful husband of one year (we've know each other since the 9th grade, but that's a story for another day), and 2 beautiful twin boys (men). My "men" are both in college going into their junior years and needless to say, this mom is proud!
So, I'm a wife, mom, a full-time nurse, part-time student and thought I was set in my ways. Thought I'd be in Honey Brook the rest of my life, in this house and at my current job of 26 years. Well...not so fast! At the ripe young age of 58, we have decided to move to L.A. after the boys graduate college, which gives us two years to plan. We took a trip to L.A. for my husband's birthday this past March and fell in love. The thought no more snow, no more leaves to rake, are huge selling points in their own right. But, we looked at the scenery of L.A., the mountains, the beach, the desert all there at our fingertips and fell in love. Yes, yes, yes, we know it's expensive and we aren't getting any younger, right? We work here, we will work there. That won't change. We all know life is short. We've all experienced death of loved ones, friends and think to ourselves, everyday counts because we aren't guaranteed another. I've said that many times. It applies here more than ever because if we don't follow our dreams when we are still active, relatively healthy and sane, we will never do it. We don't want to be much older and regret not moving when we first talked about it. The time is now or never. So the decision was actually an easy one. What is left is the hard part. The how's, the finances of it all, the selling of our home and buying another 3000 miles away, etc..Not for the faint of heart by any stretch, but doable. We can do this as a family/team. This is where the proverbial rubber hits the road and we find out what we are made of speech. The purpose of this blog is two-fold. One, it will help me release stress into a creative outlet during this process and two, it may just help somebody else out there who has thought about moving across country and is as clueless as we are! Maybe with our trials and tribulations brought to the world wide web, somebody else may have suggestions for us and us for them. Who knows? This journey is just beginning for us and keeping a journal is a great way to stay sane and stay on track with our time frame.
Enough about me....I'm sure by now you are asking who the heck is Red and why is he going to Hollywood? After all, this blog is titled "Red Goes to Hollywood" isn't it? Firstly, Red. Red came into our lives by total accident. We went to our local SPCA in October of 2013 looking for a cat. There was a sale that weekend for all bully breeds, a mere 50 bucks and we could have our pick. So, our "cat" turned into a 63 lb. pit bull! A gentle, red-nosed pit bull who melted our hearts and quickly became our companion, friend and family member. I did blame the SPCA a little. I mean, who can resist a goofy pit bull in a Halloween costume sitting by the front door just looking for his new forever home? We still tell people Red is the best 50 bucks we've ever spent!
So now you know who Red is. But why the heck is he going to Hollywood and leaving his little rural town in Pennsylvania for L.A.? Red lives in Amish country. Buggies, cows, cornfields for miles. He loves his bed, his house (which he arranges how he likes it) and his favorite of all toys, his shark.
Given it's Shark Week on Discovery Channel as I type this, I had to give a shout out to his constant companion!
Red is going to Hollywood and doesn't know it. That's right. He has zero clue as to what is about to happen to him in the next few years. He is the rock, the level head that will keep us sane through the chaos that is surely going to drop down on us like a ton of bricks. We can talk to Red about our fears, excitement, worries, eagerness, ANYTHING and he listens. He listens like a $500/hr psychiatrist without judgment, or the financial strain that, well, a $500/hr psychiatrist costs! Red will be our touchstone in this process and he won't even know it! He hasn't a care in the world and I think I'm jealous of him already! If it's possible to be jealous of one's own dog, than I am.
My next post will be about housing. I know it's early for that one, but there's a story here that actually does concern Red. It's well worth mentioning for other dog owners, in particular a pit bull owner. So please stay tuned..

Congratulations on your decision. Coming from someone who moved to Nashville for 8 years and plan on going back when I retire, take only your most valuable sentimental things. You can sell everything here and buy new and/or used stuff when you get there. Since Steve was so gracious with his time to bring me back from Nashville with Rich, if you need any help, just ask. Looking forward to hearing about the updates. The two years will fly.
ReplyDeleteSteve told me about your move! Yes, two years will fly by and we spend our spare time planning. I like your advice and we will most definitely purge and re-buy! Thanks for following Red! 🐾
Delete50 years ago or so, the "adventure east" began for me from a town near Hollywood. My memories from California are happy ones. I do remember the beauty and the attraction of southern California. Best of luck on your Adventure West!
